What is Anycast?

Back to Helps

Anycast is a name server network with multiple name server nodes located around the world. Name servers play an important role for the functioning of the Internet. One of their jobs is to function as an address book, informing your browser and computer where the website you’re looking for is located. Instead of the industry standard of only two name servers, Anycast is based on various name server nodes situated around the world.

Address requests by users are always sent to the closest name server in the network, which increases the loading speed of the website. Anycast name servers also reduce the risk of a website being unreachable due to downtime of a particular name server. This is because it’ almost impossible for all name server nodes in the Anycast network to be offline or unavailable at the same time.
