What is a Zone File?

Back to Help

A zone file is information (records), stored on the name server of a domain name. Zone files play an important role as they contain essential technical information and instructions for various services. For example, the A’ Record in the zone file contains the IP address of your web hosting and tells the computer and browser of your users where your website lives.

Zones files also store the mail server information in the MX Record, which is telling your mail client where to receive and sent email to. Additional information and more details about zone files and DNS can be found on our DNS Infrastructure page.
