Generic domain extensions have a generic meaning and purpose like .COM or .ORG and are not associated with a specific country. People refer to them also as gTLDs which stands for “generic Top Level Domains”. The most popular generic extension is .COM which stands for “commercial”.
It was one of the first domain extensions and has accumulated over 150.000.000 registered domains in its namespace. Other widely used gTLDs are.ORG, the abbreviation for organisation, and .INFO which stands for information. Generic domain extensions are globally focussed and globally recognised.
This makes them, in general, the preferred choice for businesses and companies that operate in more than just their own country.
