What is URL forwarding?

Back to Help

There are three different types of URL forwarding. URL forwarding allows you to redirect any traffic of your domain to another website:

Framed-forwarding:Means that you will see still the initial domain name in the browser window, but the website and content from the forwarded domain name. For example, if you type “moreweb.nz” into your browser, you would get the “moreweb.nz” website in the browser window (in the FRAME), but the URL remains the same.

Permanent 301 redirect:If you use a permanent 301 redirect, any person opening the domain name will be forwarded to the destination domain. Other than with the frame forwarding, the initial domain in the browser search will change into the destination domain name. For example, if you type “moreweb.net” into your browser, you will be redirected to “moreweb.nz” and “moreweb.nz” will also be shown in the browser field. Using a permanent 301 also tells the search engines that the content of the forwarded domain name can be found permanently at the destination website.

Temporary 302 redirect:The temporary 302 redirect works basically just like the permanent 301 redirect, with the difference that the search engines are being informed that this is just a temporary redirect. This feature is useful when for example, the main website is under construction or under longer maintenance. The users can be forwarded to a temporary website that contains the information they were looking for. Using this redirect, does therefore not change the index information at the search engines.
