What is a SMD file?

Back to Help

SMD is a specific file, which is generated for a trademark after it’s successfully registered with the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) brand protection service. The SMD file is needed by trademark owners in order to register/claim their domain name in the Sunrise phase of a newly launched domain extension, before anybody else gets the chance to register it.

This allows the trademark owner to prevent fraudulent registration of their domain name by a third party. For more information regarding the TMCH brand protection service, see the TMCH product page on our website.
