Each registry has a list of domain names or certain categories of names that are restricted and not available for registration. Restricting domains shall protect either the rightful owner of these names or protect Internet users. The restricted domains lists vary significantly from country to country and from registry to registry. Some examples of restricted domains are:

  1. Two-letter domains
  2. Country and territory names
  3. Generic terms related to the registry, services the registry offers or the Internet: Internet, www, NIC, whois
  4. Names and abbreviations of well known international organisations: Red Cross, WHO, UNESCO, etc.
  5. Adult terms: sex, porn, pornography, etc.
  6. Governmental terms and abbreviations: gov, police, etc.
