Network Information Centre is commonly used as a synonym for Registry and describes the organisations that manage domain extensions; in particular the governmental bodies that manage country code domain extension.

Many of them use NIC in their name for example DENIC, the organisation that manages the German country code extension .DE, NICAT the Austrian one responsible for .AT or CNNIC the Chinese Registry for .CN.
