Six free ways to find SEO keyword ideas

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the science of making your website show up in your customer’s Google searches. Basically, it’s predicting what groups of words they’re most likely to search with and making sure those words show up in key areas of your site, like your headings, subheadings and body copy.

There are plenty of tools available to help you find potential keywords, and many of them come with a hefty price tag. But keyword research doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are some free tools you can use to help find the best keywords for your website.

Google Keyword Planner

Google’s free tool requires you to jump through a few hoops to use it – you have to set up your Adwords account with your current billing information, create a campaign, and make sure your account is running in expert mode. Fortunately, full instructions are built into the keyword planner, and no spend is required to do the research.

Google Related Searches

An easy but powerful way to find a wealth of keywords, Google Related Searches lurks at the bottom of every Google search page. Simply type your product or service in the search box, then scroll down to find a list of similar search terms that people have been using.

Ubersuggest

SEO guru Neil Patel’s keyword analyser will give you three free searches per day. It not only produces lists of potential keywords but also gives you links to articles about your subject that can help you come up with content ideas for your website. If you decide to take the plunge and upgrade to the paid version, it starts at a very affordable $29 per month (at the time of writing) if you’re managing three websites or fewer.

Amazon Auto-Suggest

When it comes to retail, Amazon is a giant with around 350 million items when you account for both its own inventory and that of its Marketplace sellers. As you can imagine, that equates to billions of searches – data that Amazon’s site uses to automatically suggest search terms to you when you start browsing the site. Start typing your product into the Amazon search box to immediately see a list of related searches you can use as keywords.

Quora

You don’t just want to attract customers to your site through purchase searches – you also want to snag them when they’re searching for information about an aspect of your product or service. An SEO-friendly blog topic is fantastic for garnering inbound traffic, and question and answer site Quora is a goldmine of things that people want to know. Enter your product or service into Quora’s search engine to see exactly what people are asking about it.

Semrush

Online marketing powerhouse Semrush is one of the most popular tools for SEO professionals, but they allow anyone to use their services in a limited capacity for free (as long as you have created an account). For example, you can do ten searches a day in their domain analytics and keyword analytics databases, create and manage one project, and use their Keyword Magic tool (although you need to pay to save your search results).
